The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) is a pan-European alliance of 127 in 40 countries protecting and advancing the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons. They comment on Brunner, Commissioner-designate for Internal Affairs and Migration &nbsp;and Dubravka \u0160uica , Commissioner-designate for the Mediterranean. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the Democracy Package, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/new-push-european-democracy\/protecting-democracy_en\">Protecting democracy<\/a>, from the Commission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/thinktank\/en\/document\/EPRS_ATA(2023)747908\">Foreign interference in EU democratic processes: Second report<\/a>, from a special committee of the European Parliament, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20230210IPR74716\/special-committee-on-foreign-interference-to-deal-with-corruption-allegations\">press release on the report of the special committee on foreign interference to deal with corruption allegations<\/a> EP Feb 23, and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eumonitor.eu\/9353000\/1\/j9vvik7m1c3gyxp\/vlr4ft8qvlz4\">the announcement of the committee and its ToR<\/a>, by EU monitor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the Rule of Law report, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/policies\/justice-and-fundamental-rights\/upholding-rule-law\/rule-law\/annual-rule-law-cycle_en\">upholding the rule of law, its annual cycle<\/a>, from the Commission, includes links to past reports. The first was in 2020 and so they have never commented on the UK. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ukandeu.ac.uk\/the-eus-rule-of-law-crisis-has-progress-been-made\/\">The EUs rule of law crisis: Has progress been made?<\/a> by Joelle Grogan of UKICE, I summarise, good intentions but politics gets in the way; everyone claims it&#8217;s the priority, but power and the legislative programme are more important.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) Director Michael O&#8217;Flaherty <a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/speech\/2023\/defending-rule-law-europe\">delivered a policy statement<\/a> on the challenges which are currently posed to the rule of law in the European Union on 15 May at a Law Society of Ireland seminar in Dublin. He spoke about how to promote and strengthen fundamental rights throughout the EU. (This is very good!) He quotes <a href=\"https:\/\/worldjusticeproject.org\/\">the World Justice Project&#8217;s index<\/a> of the rule of law. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/EN\/legal-content\/glossary\/suspension-clause-article-7-of-the-treaty-on-european-union.html\">Suspension clause article 7 of the treaty on European union<\/a>, from the treaty site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The commission&#8217;s page on the coming, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/new-push-european-democracy\/protecting-democracy\/european-media-freedom-act_en\">European media freedom act<\/a>, also the query &#8220;eu media freedom act&#8221; returns lots of comments and explanations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The AI Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/\">https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/<\/a> , the Commission&#8217;s page, <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/regulatory-framework-ai\">https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/regulatory-framework-ai<\/a>, and the Parliament&#8217;s page, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/topics\/en\/article\/20230601STO93804\/eu-ai-act-first-regulation-on-artificial-intelligence\">https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/topics\/en\/article\/20230601STO93804\/eu-ai-act-first-regulation-on-artificial-intelligence<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate on independence of the media, led me to look at how the US regulates foreign owned media, and their journalists; TLDR they consider them lobbyists or spies. See <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2024\/07\/guide-to-legal-rights-in-the-u-s-2\/\">Guide to legal rights in the US<\/a> from the US based Committee to Protect Journalists and the US government page on <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/employment\/visas-members-foreign-media-press-radio.html\">Visas for Members of the Foreign Media, Press, and Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Press Coverage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/world-news\/europe\/michael-mcgrath-speaks-after-three-hour-long-confirmation-hearing-for-justice-commissioner\/a464714153.html#\">Michael Mcgrath speaks after three hour long confirmation hearing for justice commissioner<\/a>, in the Irish Independent, says very little, but then neither did he.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>politico.eu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-commissioner-hearings-european-parliament-policy-glenn-micallef-sport-malta-maros-sefcovic-trade-economic-security-slovakia\/#Fitto\">summarises <\/a>their view of the hearings. This will save me a lot of time, although I will finish the McGrath hearings.
