Here are two articles that address Google&#8217;s continued anticompetitive behaviour, and AI become an interlocutor for search. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/enrique-dans\/the-long-tail-lockdown-how-google-is-quietly-fencing-off-the-internet-for-itself-82500bc767ef\">The long tail lockdown: how Google is quietly fencing off the internet for itself<\/a> on Medium, behind a paywall, but <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/enrique-dans\/the-long-tail-lockdown-how-google-is-quietly-fencing-off-the-internet-for-itself-82500bc767ef\">available with a friend link<\/a>.  This article by Enrique Dans talks about Google&#8217;s control of the entry point for crawlers and AI training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stultiferanavis.it\/la-rivista\/che-fine-faranno-i-siti-web\">What will happen to websites? (In Italian)<\/a> at Stultifera Navis (which has an interesting translation) by Carlos Mazzuccheli; I read it via Firefox which offered me an automatic translation. I made <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1pGbyqVn1duQuAEJnTP9t_T5uVfbFwJ_7\/view?usp=drive_link\">an English Translation<\/a> (using tools).  Amongst the article&#8217;s pieces of evidence, is the assertion that search or click through are dramatically declining. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is <a title=\"by me, although you might be better searching for her own words\" href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/the-downsides-of-the-a-i-industry\/\">Karen Hao&#8217;s contention<\/a> that Sam Altman deliberately made ChatGPT so compute intensive so he didn&#8217;t have to compete with Google on talent. It would be ironic if &#8220;training&#8217;s&#8221; need for web crawlers handed the competitive advantage back to Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This essay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wheresyoured.at\/the-men-who-killed-google\/\">https:\/\/www.wheresyoured.at\/the-men-who-killed-google\/<\/a> by Ed Zitron examines the dialectic tension between Google&#8217;s need to earn, through results sponsorship versus the necessary honesty to keep people using it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really need to get to grips with <a href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/fragment-on-machines\/\">the fragment on machines<\/a> and the ownership of knowledge. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is some stuff written about how Google struggles between offering a great customer experience and profitability, but AI is changing that.
