(Liverpool has a paid service and the funding status for Newcastle in County Down is unstated.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>San Francisco<\/h3>\n<p>San Francisco famously experimented with free city wide WiFi. It was started with quite a splash and I was visiting it on a frequent basis. It seems they have suspended municipal investment in the programme in 2007 and invest in more directed programme to resolve the digital divide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a title=\"Google, Earthlink and SFO Wifi .pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160201181813\/http:\/\/sfgov3.org\/ftp\/uploadedfiles\/dtis\/tech_connect\/earthlinkSanFranciscoOralPresentationPublic031506.pdf\">.pdf public presentation<\/a> by Earthlink and Google describing their plans in 2006.<\/li>\n<li>A Marketwatch article, dated 2007, which <a title=\"Marketwath records SFO's abandonmanet of citi-wide free wifi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/san-francisco-formally-ends-citywide-wi-fi-effort\">records San Francisco&#8217;s abandonment of the Public\u00a0 Private Partnership efforts to provide a city wide free wifi<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Mayor of San Francisco, <a title=\"SFO Mayor Newson&#039;s 2008 Inaugral address, not much on Wifi, but it did make it.\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140325202026\/http:\/\/sfgov3.org\/ftp\/uploadedfiles\/shapeupsf\/InauguralAddress.pdf\">Gavin Newson&#8217;s 2008 inaugural address<\/a>, he resigned to become California&#8217;s Lieutenant Governor, but had promised to continue efforts to expand the service. The current mayor is Edwin Lee, the municipal department responsible for Digitial Inclusion is the <a title=\"SFO Department of Technology\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170526214328\/http:\/\/sfgov3.org:80\/index.aspx?page=1421\">Department of Technology<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <a title=\"Digitial Inclusion in San Franciso\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170120210508\/http:\/\/www.sfgov3.org\/ftp\/uploadedfiles\/digital_inclusion\/reports_publications\/UCBDigitalInclusionReport060282007Final.pdf\">UCB Report about Digital Inclusion in San Francisco<\/a>, dated 2007, possibly the research foundation of today&#8217;s city policies.<\/li>\n<li>A wired article talking <a title=\"wired on SFO wifi\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120429043522\/http:\/\/www.wired.com:80\/epicenter\/2008\/01\/meraki-to-tackl\">about SFO Wifi II driven by Meraki<\/a>, sounds like BT Fon in terms of distributed asset ownership, and in part administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Jan 2012, the Telegraph ran a story on how Westminster and Kensington &amp; Chelsea boroughs have agreed with O2 to build the world&#8217;s biggest free wifi network, this is mirrored at this thread at South East Central.
