It might be useful for others. I first stayed there at the end of the summer 2005. We stayed at the <strong>art&#8217;otel mitte<\/strong> im Mitte and visited the centre of Berlin with a quick trip to the <strong>Story of Berlin<\/strong> on the Ku&#8217;f&#8217;dam, which is worth revisiting. I posted my pictures to a&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/davelevy\/sets\/1090962\/\">Berlin set in flickr<\/a> which is now displayed as a slide show below\/overleaf. Take a mask, you never know when you might need it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speaking German<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s about time I refreshed my German via Duolingo., although some argue English is preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staying there<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hotels<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I revised these links in 2019; I deleted those that I might have merely been interested in, inserted the 2019 Hotel and kept two that I might still visit. I have stayed at the art&#8217;otel mitte, and Victor&#8217;s Residenz. The Google Map has the other&#8217;s that I have heard of, or considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victors.de\/en\/hotels\/victor-s-residenz-hotel-berlin\">Victors Residenz, Berlin<\/a>, 2019 4*s, got an upgrade, to a suite which was very roomy, good if staying for a while; I wish my flat in London was as big. I found this via Expedia. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.co.uk\/RestaurantsNear-g187323-d306046-Victor_s_Residenz_Hotel_Berlin-Berlin.html\">Trip Advisor&#8217;s 10 nearest<\/a> restaurants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myershotel.de\/en\/\">Hotel Myers<\/a>, found this while looking some time before 2007, looks rather fab and don&#8217;t want to forget it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <a title=\"Hotel Adina in Berlin\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141028164826\/http:\/\/www.adina.eu:80\/adina-apartment-hotel-berlin-hackescher-markt\/home\">Adina Apartment Hotel Berlin <\/a>Hackescher Markt, inspired by the same chain in Frankfurt <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I thought it&#8217;d be nice to stay be some water, <a title=\"Berlin, by beachfront hotels\" href=\"https:\/\/beach-front-hotels.com\/berlin\/\">this<\/a>, and <a title=\"Waterfront hotels in Brandenburg, from Top 10 Berlin.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.top10berlin.de\/en\/cat\/hotels-2485\/waterfront-hotels-brandenburg-2966\">this<\/a> list some hotels that claim that geography<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The map (see below) now has a bunch of hotels placed upon it, in both East &amp; West Berlin, some came from a BA flight magazine, some just from looking for places to go, and\/or the Rough Guide, it now included some recommended by Expedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apartments<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I might check this out again, my first port of call is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.co.uk\/\">AirBnB<\/a><a name=\"transport\"><\/a>, but I recently came across,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wunderflats.com\/en\">https:\/\/wunderflats.com\/en<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All trains, trams and buses are under one price scheme. They have three zones, A,B&amp;C. Day Tickets can be bought for AB or ABC. Sch\u00f6nefeld is in C, I bought a one way ticket for \u20ac3.40 on arrival, and another on the way back. The Hotel sold me day tickets,for the other days (not any more). It might be best to buy the return at the Sch\u00f6nefeld ticket machines; the buses only take coins (not sure if this is still true! allegedly <em>21\/4\/22<\/em>). One way tickets need to be used within two hours of validation and you may not double back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am unclear about how and where to buy day passes and if the Buses require or reject cash. All train stations have ticket vending machines and I think they do on the trams too. Whether the trams sell day passes is also a mystery to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BVG now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\/subscriptions-and-tickets\/all-apps\">have an app<\/a>, fabulous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/berlinmap360.com\/berlin-metro-map#.Xg_nENngrDc\">tube map<\/a>, &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/berlinmap360.com\/website\/var\/tmp\/image-thumbnails\/0\/636\/thumb__map\/berlin-metro-map.pjpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/berlinmap360.com\/website\/var\/tmp\/image-thumbnails\/0\/636\/thumb__map\/berlin-metro-map.pjpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Berlin Tube Map<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting there<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU has introduced pre-arrival checks for non EU citizens, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schengenvisainfo.com\/etias\/\">ETIAS<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/etias.com\/etias-requirements\/etias-for-british-citizens\">comment<\/a> about Brits, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/passenger-travel-to-the-eu-by-air-rail-or-sea#flying-to-the-eu-from-the-uk\">by HMG<\/a>. These will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mandatory in 2023<\/span>. Phew!. Looks like ETIAS may be delayed to 2024, and now 2025, and now 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flying<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I for my first two trips, I arrived via Tegal, now shut, and then via Sch\u00f6nefeld. Berlin&#8217;s long awaited Berlin Brandenburg opened in time for my fifth trip. I used BA when I returned in 2022 which landed at Berlin Brandenburg, and again in 2023. BA and Lufthansa fly from LCY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Priority Pass do not seem to have a lounge at BER, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headforpoints.com\/2023\/03\/17\/review-tempelhof-lounge-berlin-brandenburg-airport\/\">some Airlines do<\/a>; obviously not for all passengers, so I need to check what tickets my carrier allows lounge access. It&#8217;d be good to know if Business tickets allowed priority queuing for security. <em>2023<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what they say about <a href=\"https:\/\/ber.berlin-airport.de\/en.html\">Brandenburg<\/a> and&nbsp; how to <a href=\"https:\/\/ber.berlin-airport.de\/en\/orientation\/getting-here.html\">get to and from Brandenburg,<\/a> they say<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>BER Airport is connected to the rail and road network. Airport Express and regional trains run together four times an hour from station T1-2 to Berlin Central Station. In addition, the S-Bahns S9 and S45 run from T1-2 to Berlin city centre.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin airport security <em>require<\/em> liquids to be presented for inspection, but not batteries or phones <em>2023<\/em>. The BA staff insisted I took my keyboard with me as hand luggage as I checked in my other bag in to the hold. Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/transport-modes\/air\/aviation-security\/information-air-travellers_en\">the EU statement on what may or may not be checked in<\/a>to aircraft luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S-Bahn platform&#8217;s at BER are 5 &amp; 6. The RE &amp; Express use different platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of the trains from BER, travel north and arrive via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/en\/train-stations\/1833516-2932875-station-berlin-gesundbrunnen.en.html\">Berlin Gesundbrunnen<\/a> station. Tripadvisor suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.co.uk\/AttractionsNear-g187323-d4385328-Gesundbrunnen_Station-Berlin.html\">some things to do<\/a>, although some are not so close, useful on the trips to Binz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By train<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There is now an overnight sleeper from Brussels or just an ICE via Cologne. <em>The man in seat 61<\/em> has two pages, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seat61.com\/Germany.htm#london-to-berlin-by-train\">Deutsche Bahn<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seat61.com\/trains-and-routes\/european-sleeper.htm\">Eurosleeper<\/a>. The London to Brussels ticket is bought from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurostar.com\/uk-en\">Eurostar<\/a>. This currently requires two bookings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eurosleeper is expensive if hiring the sleeper carriage, otherwise DB ICE via Cologne, \u00a3156 + <b>\u20ac<\/b>30 for 1st class&nbsp;upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food &amp; Drink<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/tv-turm.de\/en\/\">TV Tower<\/a> and a recommendation for the best donner kebab on Earth, see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.co.uk\/Restaurants-g187323-Berlin.html\">Best Restaurants in Berlin<\/a> from tripadvisor, they filter by style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am told that next time I should visit Savigny Platz which also has a huge number of restaurants. Not to be confused with the Alte National Gallery, which I have done. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smb.museum\/en\/museums-institutions\/james-simon-galerie\/home\/\">James Simon Museum<\/a>, on Musee Insel, actually the visitor centre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/en\/index.html\">https:\/\/www.berliner-unterwelten.de\/en\/index.html<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bauhaus.de\/de\/bauhaus-archiv\/\">Bauhaus archive <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hanging around<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/botanic-garden-and-botanical-museum\">Botanical Gardens<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/article\/20231116-the-hidden-beauty-of-berlins-indoor-pools\">architecturally significant swimming pools<\/a> it seems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtico.com\/charterarea-berlin\">headlines<\/a>&nbsp; &amp; <a title=\"dingy sailing in berlin from lmgtfy\" href=\"https:\/\/lmgtfy.com\/?q=dingy+sailing+in+berlin\">dingy sailing<\/a> &#x1f605;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trabi-museum.com\/home\">Trabi Museum<\/a> &#x1f697;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stadtmuseum.de\/en\/museum\/maerkisches-museum\">City Museum, otherwise known as the Maerkisches Museum<\/a> which was shut in 24, and seems likely to remain so for a couple of years. <acronym title=\"Closed\">&#x1f6a7;<\/acronym><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Xmas Markets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9DedehwuA30\">check this video<\/a>, although there&#8217;s probably more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/en\/attractions-and-sights\/3561384-3104052-peacock-island.en.html\">Peacock Island<\/a>, and a page on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/en\/public-transportation\/ferries\/1828176-7322324-ferry-pfaueninsel.en.html\">Ferry<\/a>,&nbsp; although it seems to have boarding point wrong which I have marked on my map. There is a bus stop and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfaueninsel.de\/\">pub<\/a> by the quay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The top of the Bundestag building, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundestag.de\/en\/visittheBundestag\/dome\/registration-245686\">needs pre-registration<\/a> &#x2714;&#x2714;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karl Marx Allee, maybe best done by bike&nbsp;&#x2714;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Flak Tower in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/humboldthain-park\">the Humboldthain Park<\/a>, for the view &#x2714;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/east-side-gallery\">East Side Gallery<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastsidegallery-berlin.com\/\">[*]<\/a> once was the wall &#x2714;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tv-turm.de\/en\/\">Fernesturm<\/a>, both restaurant and viewing platform, can these be booked in advance&nbsp;&#x2714;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mexikoplatz, seems pretty from the train, and while <a href=\"https:\/\/beoriginaltours.com\/what-makes-mexikoplatz-in-zehlendorf-a-must-visit-destination-in-berlin\/#Culinary-Delights\">this page suggests<\/a> there are several Mexican restaurants, google maps does not agree. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Zoo, marked by PETA as poor, so probably not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to do again<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/story-berlin\">The Story of Berlin<\/a> exhibition, ends in an atomic bunker, but deals with the History of Berlin from its foundation as the capital of the Duchy of Brandenburg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I originally wrote this for me, and used it to record stuff I need to plan and visit the city.&nbsp; It&#8217;s still pretty much the same.
