Technically speaking,&nbsp;<b>Hugo<\/b>&nbsp;is a static site generator. Here are my notes , I tried three times, the most recent attempt in Dec 2022. &#8230;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Version 5<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So I need to revise my web site at dfl.ddns.net. Introduction is more complex than I need and I have lost the source files. So I look at a themes page, and select the minimal filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose <a href=\"https:\/\/themes.gohugo.io\/themes\/hugo-papermod\/\">PaperMod <\/a>and install <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/adityatelange\/hugo-PaperMod\/wiki\/Installation\">according to their instructions<\/a>, using the git submodule method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/papermod-w750.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/papermod-w750.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/papermod-w750.png 750w, https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/papermod-w750-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I am using an Ubuntu 22 build with Hugo already installed; this generates errors around resolving the language parameter; the answer is to upgrade the Hugo version. It creates a folder <em>public<\/em> in the folder containing the config.toml. The target public folder needs to be empty. I run <em>hugo<\/em> from .\/<em>examplesite<\/em>. There is a bug on the 404 page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I need to run <em>hugo new <\/em>from<em> .\/examplesite<\/em>&nbsp; specifying the name of the markdown file with a relative path. and reference to the theme folder e.g.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hugo new ..\/content\/$lang\/blog\/${name}.md -t ..\/..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draft needs to be false to be pushed into the local server<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Version 2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It seemed easy but wasn&#8217;t. I was helped by <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gohugo.io\/getting-started\/quick-start\/\">the getting started page<\/a> again &#x1f913; My target is a static site on AWS\/S3, but it seems <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/opensource.com\/article\/19\/4\/building-hosting-website-git\">I could use git<\/a>. In fact, I gave up on amazon because they charge extra and complicate the delivery over https.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Version Update<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am writing some code, and t<a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/steinwaywhw\/a4cd19cda655b8249d908261a62687f8\">his is incredibly useful,<\/a> it documents how to find the latest release. I wrote a script <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dfl1955\/ubuntu-tools\/blob\/master\/tools\/whathugoversion\">https:\/\/github.com\/dfl1955\/ubuntu-tools\/blob\/master\/whathugoversio<\/a>n to perform this role, but at my version three, I was using apt to install it. i.e. my script <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dfl1955\/ubuntu-tools\">on github<\/a>, in <code>whathugoversion<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Media Buttons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted more and tracked it from <code>ananke<\/code> via git to <code>tachyons<\/code>. The <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/tachyons.io\/components\/buttons\/centered-icons\/index.html\">list is limited<\/a> and defined and beyond me to extend. An RSS and Web site icon would be good. Most themes seem to use <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/tachyons.io\/\">Tachyons CSS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/victoriadrake\/hugo-theme-introduction\">Introduction<\/a> uses icons from <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/fontawesome.com\/search?m=free&amp;o=r\">fontawesome.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On themes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As at Version 3, I made a site using <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/victoriadrake\/hugo-theme-introduction\">introduction<\/a>, also <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/hugothemesfree.com\/a-minimalist-highly-versatile-theme-for-hugo\/\">boosted here<\/a>, the latter contains instructions on using the git module. I also tried to restore my <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dfl1955\/hugo-web-site\">old version based on ananke<\/a>. , which remains quite old; I may have lost the development tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For version 1, I kept to the trial version, <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/budparr\/gohugo-theme-ananke#change-the-hero-background\">ananke<\/a>. For version two I found <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/matsuyoshi30\/harbor\">Harbor<\/a>, <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/syui\/hugo-theme-air\">Air<\/a> and <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/runningstream\/hugograyscale\">Greyscale<\/a> these are now still available in git<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harbor <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/matsuyoshi30\/harbor\">looks cool,<\/a> but its install is not simple, it throws an error; <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/discourse.gohugo.io\/t\/found-no-layout-file-for-html\/18983\">there seems to be a missing template<\/a> somewhere. I f<a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/matsuyoshi30\/harbor\">ound some help<\/a> in using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/syui\/hugo-theme-air\">Hugo Air,&nbsp; this is rather fab<\/a> because of its header picture, I had a<a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/syui\/hugo-theme-air\/issues\/7\"> problem<\/a> getting the menu to work. When I rteurned to it in 2022, I made a <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/hugo-air-theme\/\">post exclusively<\/a> for the Air theme,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greyscale <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/runningstream.github.io\/hugograyscale\/\">is still going<\/a>, I see why I liked it.&nbsp; <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/runningstream\/hugograyscale\">@github<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hugo\" width=\"1099\" height=\"618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLldyfKedjcZQFLE4YMWqilU6RFu-b5gpz\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AWS &amp; https<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For HUGO, the base site is defined with a protocol prefix; if using AWS S3 without cloudfront, it must be HTTP i.e. <code>http<\/code>. I have <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/web-hosting-on-aws-s3\/\">a related pos<\/a>t on this topic,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GIT<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I need to work out how to hold the site in git, the<a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dfl1955\/hugo-web-site\/branches\"> current repo is here<\/a>, and holds the whole build. Once I am sorted, how to I write the site to git as a backup. I need a resource on on branches and versions. (Perhaps the whole thing <strong>is<\/strong> needed because some customisation occurs in the go files).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hugo Problems<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At first the prod site would not display the new image. Best not use AWS as a dev. platform, unless you have a graphic desktop. Is this done via <code>git<\/code>? Or <code>cpio<\/code>, both or either it would seem. cpio for intra-system, git between systems?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hugo program <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gohugo.io\/commands\/hugo\/\">CLI documentation, here &#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/code.tutsplus.com\/tutorials\/make-creating-websites-fun-again-with-hugo-the-static-website-generator-written-in-go--cms-27319\">looks useful<\/a>. It documents how to download all the themes, and how to make posts and pages, a photo gallery and points at some deployment tools.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Publication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The program call <code>hugo<\/code>, with or without the -t parameter generates the site which is held in a folder called <code>.\/public\/<\/code>, this can be the subject of your favourite copy command to relocate the site in you web server&#8217;s html root directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drafts &amp; Public<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I have created content using the <code>hugo new posts<\/code> command, this creates a .md file with the meta data inc. the title and the post content. Content can be edited using your favourite editor, I used vi. I need to work out how to enclose images and hyperlinks at some stage. It also defaults to status <code>draft = true<\/code>. This can be changed by deleting the parameter line and regenerating the site i.e. running <code>hugo -t $themename<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to deploy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I found the following hard to find,&nbsp;<em>How to deploy a Hugo Site?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build it using the instructions <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gohugo.io\/getting-started\/quick-start\/\">here &#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure your content files are not <code>draft = true<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run <code>hugo -t $themename<\/code>., which will create a <code>.\/public<\/code> directory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the contents of the <code>.\/public<\/code> directory to your html root directory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BaseURL Parameter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the hyperlinks have this value copied into the URL, this ties the site to the <code>hostname<\/code>. I wonder why they do this?&nbsp; <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gohugo.io\/getting-started\/configuration\/\">gohugo.io &#8211; getting-started configuration\/<\/a> lists the parameters including <code>baseURL<\/code>, <code>relativeURL<\/code> and <code>canonifyURL<\/code>. Today the <code>baseURL<\/code> should\/must be an <code>https<\/code> name. This thread <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/discourse.gohugo.io\/t\/confusion-with-baseurl\/12125\/2\">discusses<\/a> the use of baseURL and transitioning from dev to prod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Misc.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/gohugo.io\/tools\/migrations\/\">wordpress converters<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default RSS&nbsp; is at BaseURL\/index.xml.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hugo&nbsp;is a general-purpose website framework.
