{"id":388,"date":"2013-04-05T09:53:30","date_gmt":"2013-04-05T09:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wiki.davelevy.info\/?p=388"},"modified":"2023-05-12T18:49:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T18:49:13","slug":"p2p-dns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/p2p-dns\/","title":{"rendered":"P2P DNS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Looking at DNS and the attempt to P2P it.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Sunde launched a project, reported at Computer World in an article called <a title=\"Computer World, November 2010\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140328070542\/http:\/\/blogs.computerworld.com\/17444\/p2p_dns_to_take_on_icann_after_us_domain_seizures\">&#8220;P2P DNS to take on ICANN after US domain seizures&#8221;<\/a>. It seems to have got stuck. This article dated 18 Oct 2011 and called<a title=\"Slashdot\" href=\"http:\/\/tech.slashdot.org\/story\/11\/10\/18\/1247228\/continuing-the-distributed-dns-system\"> Continuing the Distributed DNS System<\/a> on Slashdot has some pointers. See also <a title=\"memburn.com\" href=\"http:\/\/memeburn.com\/2011\/10\/p2p-dns-taking-ownership-of-the-internet\/\">P2P-DNS taking control of the Internet<\/a>\u00a0 at memeburn.com, dated 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The nearest\u00a0successor\u00a0seems to be namecoin, see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/namecoin.info\/\">http:\/\/namecoin.info\/<\/a>\u00a0, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.namecoin.org\">https:\/\/bit.namecoin.org<\/a>\u00a0&amp; <a title=\"Namecoin on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Namecoin#Namecoin_DNS\">its wikipedia page<\/a>. I am unsure how uncoupled the name server is from the crypto-currency.<\/p>\n<p>While researching this in 2013 I came\u00a0across\u00a0a page on <a title=\"alternate roots, wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alternative_DNS_root\">alternate roots<\/a> at Wikipedia. This page says, &#8220;the <a title=\"Internet Architecture Board\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_Architecture_Board\">Internet Architecture Board<\/a> (IAB) has spoken out strongly against alternative roots&#8221;. I&#8217;ll bet it has.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, I had another look, and came across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namecoin.org\/\">https:\/\/www.namecoin.org\/<\/a>, here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=dns+site%3Awww.schneier.com%2Fblog&amp;kh=1&amp;ia=web\">a query on Bruce Schneier&#8217;s site<\/a>. Other&#8217;s imply that the only answer is to move to broadcast protocols, why not? It&#8217;s what ethernet is\/was.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, I decided to see if the state of the art had progressed. I found <a title=\"pDNS: a secure, private, decentralized P2P DNS by Baichoo, Dhoot &amp; Ranjan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scs.stanford.edu\/20sp-cs244b\/projects\/pDNS.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">this paper at Stanford U,<\/a> I think it has a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tushardhoot\/cs244b-pdns\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">github source repo<\/a> created on 29 Apr 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looking at DNS and the attempt to P2P it.
