Last week, India Bourke wrote an article in the New Statesman, called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/comment\/2022\/01\/why-rewilding-isnt-just-for-toffs\">Why rewilding isn&#8217;t just for toffs<\/a>&#8220;. She argues, that, &#8220;Small-scale farmers can play their part in conservation \u2013 Monty Don risks putting them off.&#8221; The article talks about set-aside subsidy and Monty Don&#8217;s criticism of such programmes. This piqued my interest; here are my notes. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nMy next port of call was,<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Click here to view site.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rewildingbritain.org.uk\/rewilding-projects\/wilder-blean\" width=\"650\" height=\"700\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewildingbritain.org.uk\/rewilding-projects\/wilder-blean\">C<span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I am attracted to the drama of the Bisons in Kent and hope that we might do Bears and Wolves but looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewildingbritain.org.uk\/\">Rewilding Britain<\/a> I see that a lot of less dramatic projects are in place which deserve support.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/evablue-unsplash-cropped-w650.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6194\" src=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/evablue-unsplash-cropped-w650.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/evablue-unsplash-cropped-w650.png 650w, https:\/\/davelevy.info\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/evablue-unsplash-cropped-w650-300x138.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>India says to me,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is an excellent overview of the varied ways in which rewilding can be defined, which touches briefly on the notion of urban\u00a0 rewilding:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cobi.13730\">https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cobi.13730<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also recommend Cal Flynn&#8217;s recent book, <em>Islands of Abandonment, <\/em>for a different way of thinking about what spaces have rewilding potential.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s a ton of initiatives (which I&#8217;m keen to write on more this coming year), from urban tree planting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energygarden.org.uk\/\">energygardens<\/a>, that are bringing the wild back to the city.<\/p>\n<p>I realise that these aren&#8217;t rewilding in its purest form, but I do believe that they could be part of a connected movement. And things like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/nature\/2021\/07\/how-trespass-movement-battling-kinder-more-inclusive-britain\">trespass movement <\/a>are also helping to forge these links.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>i wonder how much we lost in set-aside subsidy from the EU&#8217;s CAP. DEFRA <a href=\"https:\/\/cap-payments.defra.gov.uk\/Default.aspx\">publish<\/a> their stats on the web, but not broken down into pillars! I have also found,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk\/explainers\/common-agricultural-policy\"> Common Agricultural Policy <\/a>\u00a0at the Institute for Govt. which does have the aggregate expense for the two pillars for 2015<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-8702\/\">The Agriculture Act 2020<\/a>\u00a0from the HoC Library details the CAP spend of \u00a33,5bn which the Govt is set to match<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lmgtfy.app\/?q=how+much+did+the+EU%27s+CAP+pay+to+UK+in+2020+for+set-aside\">lmgtfy q= &#8220;how much did the EU&#8217;s CAP pay to UK in 2020 for set-aside&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lmgtfy.app\/?q=how+much+did+the+CAP+pay+to+UK+in+2020+for+set-aside\">lmgtfy q=&#8221;how much did the CAP pay to UK in 2020 for set-aside&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0better HMG sources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>i wrote a blog article, which was a news piece on the reintroduction of bison to the UK, in Kent of all places.
