In today’s Guardian live blog, Jonathan Powell, Blair’s Chief of Staff during the Anglo Irish peace process states that apart from the border, the human rights act and the EU Court, one of the central planks of the Good Friday agreement was the neutrality of the British State between the two communities. This can’t be done if one of the communities parties is in Government. I should add that it was the Tories job to ensure that the Unionists understood that Great Britain was neutral. The Labour Party & the US Government had a different job.
