Labour and the water industry

I am planning to write a series of responses to Labour NPF report 2026. Some I hope to pursue the conference itself through my CLP, others I hope will be of interest to others in the party. In this article I talk about Water, which I don’t propose to put to my CLP.

In the Commission, “MAKE BRITAIN A CLEAN ENERGY SUPERPOWER”, there is a section on the Water industry, which welcomes the Labour Government’s initiatives to repair the damage done by the conservatives. Most submissions want greater pace. The report also makes little mention of the excessive bonuses being paid to directors of Thames Water, and probably others.

In the conclusions section, on page 25, the obvious policy proposal missing is  the renationalisation of the water boards

The BBC report on 10th August that Thames Water made a £1m signing bonus to a new Finance Director. (This might well be a hook for a contemporary motion, although SERA & Mainstream have published a model motion calling for the renatitonalisation of the industry.)

One of the allegedly glaringly popular promises in the last Labour manifesto was the promise of free broadband. I wrote about it a couple of times and decided that though it was desirable, the failure to socialise it both within the movement and society as a whole allowed the promise to be undermined by questions of cost. I concluded the article above by asking “why not free water?”. One of the answers to that is that much government business, which it requires those most likely to not have the internet requires its use, on the one hand, recording business activity and on the other claiming benefits and maybe equally importantly writing to one’s MP or Council. The idea came from two sources, one of them the London CWU who issued a pamphlet, calling for broader public ownership of the telco and postal services on the grounds that private/market ownership was wasteful of wealth and resources, has delayed the adoption of superfast broadband, caused an investment famine and led to a pursuit of short term fashion & profit rather than investing in infrastructure for long term aggregate growth. This, their second event was called the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to Economics and I originally produced a storify, which is now here which is a collection of tweets and other social media comments about the event. #lab12 conference diary

#lab12 Despite being a member of the Labour Party for 38 years, I have never been to conference before; I have just returned from Manchester, where I attended for 2½ days. It was rather fun, jolly useful and thanks to some of the people I met, inspiring.

I got there late-ish on Sunday and met up with my comrades from Lewisham Deptford CLP, including @vickyfoxcroft, @joe_dromey, @joeperryuk, @mjrharris and @Len_Duvall in a bar near the conference centre. I had been disappointed that the conference and fringe running order had not been sent to me until after I bought my train ticket. This meant I missed part one of the shenanigans and the debate on “Refounding Labour” which I had wanted to attend. After the Lewisham meetup, I moved on to the New Statesman party. I think as a subscriber, I should have had an invite, I didn’t, but anyway, I got in OK. I met up with one of their staff, and expressed my views that I didn’t want to pay to read Dan Hodges and could they stop publishing his stuff. I was advised to write to the Editor, Jason Cowley, with that view, but I can’t find his email or twitter handle! Poor show! …
