This was particularly anodyne with even the rule amendments being surprisingly non-provoking.
The change of consequence in my view is that they regularised the CEC’s right to vet General Secretary candidates. This may seem odd, but the GMB is a very large organisation with an extensive compliance burden. In principle, I believe, any member in good financial standing should be able to stand and seek the necessary supporting nominations but the Union disagrees . (In order to be on the ballot paper, a candidate needs the support of 30 branches from at least two regions, and earlier this year, the CEC voted to prohibit four candidates from going forward, leaving only one candidate on the ballot paper.)
