After lunch, Lars Godsell, one of Forrester’s principal analysts shared his views about the telco industry. He promised to “separate the hype from reality”. …
Don’t just listen, understand!
It’s half term, so Sun have arranged a business trip to Barcelona. I’m attending a Sun Telco Sales team training event. The customer keynote was given by Xavier Krichner, Director de Prospectiva of Telefonica who spoke about innovation. …
Wine & Wisdom
Mark Pennycook & Bill Trim of Company-I & I had dinner at The Don restaurant in the City today. We were just catching up, discussing business, organisational issues and red wine. The sommelier was very helpful and while some may sniff at our choices, we drank …
More soon to be ex-colleagues
Dave Jones ,one of Sun’s Client Solutions CTOs and occasional blogger, was over last week and we hooked up and went to a works party. It was thrown by a bunch of the volunteers for our UK redundancy programme which you may have read about in “The Register”, here… . It was surprisingly enjoyable. The company i.e. at the party just shows that sometimes management lose track of what they’re trying to do …
Make it something interesting for a change
Is the Cluetrain Manifesto, “a spectre haunting the Internet?” Some of it is very funny, some of it bloody obvious. Its only the retards that thought the ’80s would last forever and that Gordon Gecko was a philosopher that will find some of this hard or revolutionary – the fact it’s all in one place is very good though, and its clearly written in a language that “entrepreneurs” can get! …
Back to the day job! Disruption & Optimisation
Been to Betfair and one of Accenture’s project teams recently, and following sensible advice from colleagues, while I can’t reflect what they said, I can repeat what I said, or observed. …
Cluetrain Manifesto
My copy of the Cluetrain Manifesto arrived last Friday, I’m about half way through. I bought a copy because when considering whether to start a blog last summer, Danese Cooper, recommended it as the best source to understand how and why Sun (and other employers) need us to do this, and why we should. I’ve not finished yet but some of the basics are spot on as far as I’m concerned, and often written in a direct & funny fashion. Best finish it before I say more. …
Capitalism, Communism & Monopoly
Jonathan’s Blog article “Scare Tactics in the World of Open Source” seems to imply Microsoft use the allegation of Communism as a massive insult. I understand that this isn’t unusual in the US. Probably best not ask which is a worse insult, Communist or Monopolist; only one of these activities is defended by the 1st Amendment. …
Recruit & Retain
The Register posts an article today “Nicer bosses retain more (female) staff”. Here…. Lucy Sheriff writes, “The astonishing news that women don’t like to work with horrible managers, … will undoubtedly send shock waves throughout the HR sector industry.”. I’m sure it will, HR are usually the last to catch up. Interesting that people are looking for this now; also I’m sure that not wanting to work with horrible managers isn’t restricted to women. …
10 around town

Sun commissioned a competition amongst the students at the Royal Institute of Art to associate, using sculpture, key values to the No 10, and hence Solaris to celebrate the launch of Solaris 10. The winners are available for viewing outside the Lloyd’s building on Thursday. I may try and get down to St Helen’s Piazza, these look quite good. The reason I like this marketing project, is it mixes publicising the great qualities of Solaris 10, with communitarian sponsorship and we get the double whammy of people talking about the art and talking about Sun & Solaris. Also, I like sculpture. …
