On the racist rioting, I wrote a blog article, but didn’t use all the things I found and so here they are. My notes and links …

- Bit by bit the Labour movement is beginning to react, here is the GMB/Labour Unions’ statement, and the TULO statement on thread reader, here is Brenda Dacres, the Lewisham Mayor’s statement, and here is Nadia Whittome’s post on instagram.
- @sianuska highlights the Tory complicity with rhetoric of the far right,
- and Joe Muhall, the Director of “Hope Not Hate” in an article, entitled, “Some are calling these far-right riots an outpouring of legitimate anger. They are not.” states, “There is a deep well of poison behind this racist violence. Those fuelling and perpetrating it must be held to account”.
- Also Sayeeda Warsi, a Tory Peer, bravely calls out the political cover given to the rioters and their wranglers, “The poisoning of the public discourse on Muslims, migrants and refugees has been consistent and deliberate. An anti Muslim agenda has been pursued by some in politics , the media and some think tanks and we have to be brave enough to call it out. They have created the climate that we now see play out in our towns and cities and they are as much to blame as the thugs on the street.”
And later, Mike and Paul nail the blame where it should be,
- What-lessons-can-be-learned-from-this-summers-riots? by Mike Phipps, reviewing a Compass report; Mike is concerned about the social causes and the political timidity of what he calls mainstream opinion. He may have missed the point, this was a far-right action on par with the Brevik massacre in Norway but less successful.
- The riot strategy by Paul Mason, preview only,
and on sentencing
- The BBC’s reporting on sentencing, followed by their report on Birley’s 9 year sentence for arson with intent to endanger life, violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon
- UK riots, the first perpetrators given prison sentences over disorder , from Sky News, a catalogue of the first sentences, bit light in my opinion. All for being in the vicinity of riots, one assault on a police officer and most having long lists of previous convictions.
- UK man sentenced to nine years for arson after far right riots for attempted arson reported by Al-Jazeera, “Judge says that like the other outbreaks of violence in England in early August, the case was ‘suffused with racism.’“
