In May 2026, I had another look at the consequences of Shabana Mahmood’s govt announcement entitled, “Restoring Order and Control: A statement on the government’s asylum and returns policy”. This policy announcement was supplemented by A fairer pathway to settlement which extends the time required to live in the UK to obtain ILR and citizenship.
It should be noted that the Government proposes to make these changes using statutory instruments, not primary legislation.
