There was a petition sponsored debate in the House of Commons on “Rejoining the EU” on 12th Oct. There is a video feed from parliament TV. Otherwise here are my notes. …

The speeches provoked me to look up some things,

  1. How important is AI to British Industry? from google AI perspectives; quite, it would seem. I also need to revisit how does AI diminish innovation from google AI perspectives.
  2. How much food is imported, as a % over the last 10 years, it seems according to Sir Bernard Jenkins that international trade is not that important, but we import nearly 50% of our food and nearly 70% of our fruit.
  3. Has the City of London grown in terms of jobs since 2020? It seems the answer “Yes”
  4. Jenkin and Kruger argue that innovation is key to growth not trade, and quoted the Nobel Economics prize of 2025 on innovation as a source of growth. (There are others, but this is what they chose to quote.)
  5. Mike Wood, speculated on the cost of re-entry and I asked google gemini, who come out with a lower figure than him but noted that the UK is still paying the “divorce bill”.
  6. Toby Vaughan MP introduced and summed up the debate. I made a copy from Hansard of the summing up speech. He replied on the economics, “He needs to engage with the weight of the evidence, not the selective examples that those who oppose a closer relationship with Europe ultimately rely on.”

The debate referenced a statement by the Prime Minister, earlier in the day. This is available on video, via Reuters and via a press release.
