Euronews reports a split in the European left group in the new European Parliament, this is followed up by some further reporting. I have not yet finished my reading, but this does not seem particularly strategic or even political. The left beyond the Social Democrats was pretty spit anyway between an independent presence, the European Left, and with some left parties supporting/belonging to the European Free Alliance. Or is it just European Parliament shenanigans. Here are my notes and links. …
- Left lost in labyrinth of alliances – and splits from euractiv, dated 22 Feb 2024 and forecasting a split before the election, a very comprehensive review of the very short term issues facing them, although given the age, some stories have not aged so well.
- European Left party splits as new group eyes new central and eastern countries from Yahoo, a video with words from Caterina Martins of El Bloco although finishes with the suggestion that the new group will not leave the EP Left Group, in contradiction to the Euronews article.
- The European Left after the Elections from the Rosa Luxemburg Stifung, a very comprehensive catalogue of the EP results for the Left. It also observes, “…, the often-publicized proximity of the Left Bloc and LFI to the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is false. A pro-migrant position remains central to left-wing politics in both Portugal and France.”
- The Euronews article, reports, “Finland’s Vasemmistoliitto, Portugal’s Bloco de Esquerda, Denmark’s Endheslisten and La France Insoumise have ditched the party and joined Sweden’s Vansterpartiet, Poland’s Razem and Spain’s Podemos in creating the so-called ‘European Left Alliance for the Planet and the People’, which with seven parties and 18 MEPs is now pending approval from the Authority for European Political Parties.” The application has now been approved; this could be quite hopeful.
