The Government has announced it plans to introduce a Bill to allow the Government to “dynamically align” with the European Union‘s single market.

This comes at the end of a series of events over the last four and half months, since I wrote, https://davelevy.info/wiki/brexit-reset-winter-2025-26/

  1. An agreement and press releases on the topic of competition and markets reguation. See https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_454
  2. Followed by the EU UK PPA meeting, https://www.europarl.europa.eu/delegations/en/d-uk/activities/inter-parliamentary I need to read the documents and/or watch the video. The reports from each side don’t exactly match.
  3. Reeves’ Mais Lecture where one of her three drivers for growth is the EU; worryingly the second seems to be AI data centres.

I comment on these at https://davelevy.info/labours-brexit-tanker-is-turning/, since then

  3. Keir Starmer’s April 1st Statement
  4. Fabian pamphlet, https://fabians.org.uk/publication/pressing-reset/ , in my review to be published on the Chartist, I said

What’s disappointing is that with the exception of Liam Byrne’s contribution is there’s a total lack of ambition and there remains a significant support for cherry picking. The EU and its member states reticence to give more to the country that isn’t prepared to pay its dues seems to be justified. Mood was not enough and if this pamphlet defines the outer limits of Labour’s ambition, I think it’s unlikely that much will be achieved.
