Much of my youth was pre submarine launched ICBMs, the primary means of nuclear weapons delivery was the air-forces. I both remember the testing the air raid sirens as I walked to school, and helping my Dad, who was a Civil Defence ARP warden on at least one exercise. I unrealistically played the role of a surviving victim.
I often joked that our house would be the London target for Soviet nuclear weapons, you can see it surrounded by the US Air-force bases, RAF Northolt and HMS Northwood. I have also pinned the Kroeger’s house in Ruislip.
