File Transfer & Windows 8.1

I want and need a better, faster interface for ftp and my blog server. Obvs needs to be encrypted. It seems that Windows 8.1 does not offer sftp natively but recommends WEBDAV. On my various clients I have multiple operating systems, but mainly Windows.

I had a quick poke around to see how to do this. Firstly I have an RTU for WISE-FTP through 1&1 which has great windows desktop integration but I usually use filezilla. (1and1 have moved away from WISE-FTP)

MS offer a One Drive cloud service as do Dropbox, but I want to use my 1and1 file system. (Perhaps the answer is wise ftp since that’s what they offer). Have Microsoft left this gap to enable third party products to fill it as part of non monopolistic behaviour, but surely doing the desktop integration requires the licensing of engineering rights and documentation.

Anyway Google doesn’t seem much help. Odd

I have for the moment decided to use filezilla with the –site-manager command line item. NB the — is what is used on windows as well as shell based command lines. I can find ways to go straight to my site but these require placing the password inside the shortcut.

I have made this icon –

Fedora 20

I need another Red Hat look alike and chose Fedora. My target is Virtual Box on Windows 8.1.

So remember,

  1. Install from Live CD, reboot
  2. yum install dkms binutils gcc make patch libgomp glibc-headers glibc-devel kernel-headers kernel-devel
  3. yum update
  4. reboot
  5. install guest additions, if that fails
set & export KERN_DIR, for Fedora it’ll be in /usr/src/kernel, check that the source agrees with the running kernel version using ls /usr/src/kernel & uname -a and run it from the command line

I found this page at forums.virtual.box and this page at ‘if not true then false’, which talks about what to do in the case that the Kernel Source can’t be found. (see the comments about the KERN_DIR environment variable above).

Ubuntu now offers the Virtual Guest additions as a package, and page at the fedora project the fedora project suggests that this is available for Fedora, even if one has to add the rpmfusion repo to the sources.list. Managing Yum Repositories from the Sysadmin documentation describes how to add and enable repos to Fedora.

Featured images in wordpress

My current theme for the blog is not so good when the included text is not as deep as the featured picture. While not having a featured picture is OK for a screen based reader, it’s not so good for those using the wptouch interface. Maybe it’s not so good for deep pictures either.

A google search brings up the codex and these two, similarly named links, together with the codex pages,

With zbench the image and entry text are contained in a single <DIV> with a class name of “entry”. The text is contained in a <P> tag. The image class is “attachment-extra-featured-image wp-post-image”.

  1. Would it look better within a table? This would need to be developed in index & archive pages
  2. Should I use the thumbnail feature?
  3. Can I use the CSS? NB The <P> does not have a class name.

The deep pictures would be solved by by the thumbnail features.

Maybe I should consider the HTML recognition within the excerpt functions.

ooOOOoo

Also the facebook feed does not use the featured picture, but finds the first picture within the post, maybe even the post page since it often uses the up arrow on the vote this up widget.

VIKING BERSERKER (Bear Warrior)

VIKING BERSERKER (Bear Warrior)

This is a mirror of the Epic Guild page, which it seems has now disappeared. I have added a link to my fan video of a shifter/werebear below/overleaf which was originally posted in my article, Rendering New Age Video, on this wiki.

The URL was http://home.comcast.net/~worldofgreyhawk/builds/data/build275446.html, I suspect that this is the best mirror that survives.

W8 Virtual Memory

There seems to be a common fault with W8.x, it generates memory warnings well before any reasonable memory usage.

“Close Programs to Prevent Information Loss”

The error message has a bunch of google references.

I have put up a thread at answers.microsoft.com. The first suggestion was to check that paging is on and that the file is big enough. I used google to find out how, and it would seem that it is on. I have changed the settings to manual between 12 & 18 Gb.

Rendering RSS on my blog or wiki

I have for a long time sought to present rss feeds within pages on this blog. It was started by a desire to use my social bookmark service as additional links in some of the reference articles on this wiki. The page was started in Jun 2014. Here my notes, although this page was subject to a major re-write in 2020.

There are further notes on my original delicious solution, involving their script and code embed, on Delicious Linkrolls and how I attempted to recover the delicious bookmark file. See also “About Feeds”, which is a private page, using the older wordpress plugins.

This page has notes on all the plugins I have used/experimented with.

Feedzy RSS Feeds Lite

I installed this on my momentum blog, and it sort of works. Here are some links, I got it to render, but can’t get it to post pictures on my rss files and would like to access the element names to fiddle with the css.

  1. https://docs.themeisle.com/article/1130-how-to-use-feedzy-with-a-shortcode

I posted my linkedin.rss to this page on my momentum blog. I had some problems rendering the thumbnail images. I suspect the rss syntax. Here are some links,

RSS Shortcode

I have also used RSS Shortcode, and have implemented it on the About Feeds page. I am not sure why I discontinued with this, might have been it gave me nothing that JP-RSS-FEED did not, time to revisit as JP-RSS-Feed seems to have given up the ghost.

JP-RSS-FEED

I moved onto JP’s Get RSS Feed, a wordpress plugin. I planned to use this to replace my delicious linkrolls using the delicious rss location. See also my snip, Delicious Linkrolls.

It requires a shortcode/codesnip to invoke its parameters e.g

[jp-rss-feed
    url="http://feeds.del.icio.us/v2/rss/davelevy/convoyswharf"
    numitems="7" getdesc="50" ]

I should document this differently; the snip must be on one line, and no space between the [ & the ‘jp’.

There’s a few more parameters which are documented on their home page

RSS on page via short code

and now we have another RSS rendering widget,RSS via shortcode on page

I am not sure how I used this but it seems I wrote “this was found to be broken on 17th October 2016”.

I fixed the simplepie version of the RSS rendering engine, it errored on the obverse of the home page ; it works on my ex-deliciuious files, but not if named .rss, I changed it to .xml. e.g.

RSS Bruxelles

RSS London

  • Boris Bikes Map
This is a rather cool mash up. Guerrilla programming is the way to go. Its amzing how these are never produced by the original service provider
  • a charity changing peoles lives through sailing
Based in Deptford, SE London, the Centre is open to everyone and is a place where you can have the opportunity to enjoy the experience of sailing and boating activities on the Thames in the heart of London.
  • Cartoon Museum
On 23rd February 2006 London's first cartoon museum opened to the public. Situated at 35 Little Russell Street, a stone's throw from The British Museum, The Cartoon Museum exhibits the very finest examples of British cartoons, caricature, and comic art from the 18th century to the present day.
  • Untitled
    One excellent value hotel chain
  • online - Transport for London
Buy or top up your Oyster card
  • Canary Wharf
Looking for a bar to drink at, although this only does the official malls, and excludes the shops on the colonades and squares
  • Power of Yes | Theatre review | Stage | The Guardian
On at the NT, this is the Guradian's review, on their front apge, not the back.
  • Stirling Ackroyd
They say "Home - Estate Agents in Bankside, Clerkenwell, Hackney and Shoreditch"
  • Residential Estate Agents in Docklands
Their home page, with a good district filter
  • - 1 Lombard Street
Well located and the Restaurant upstairs has a Michelin *.

It seems to have concatenated the two widgets into one short code.

Musings on O356

So work is pushing me to Office 365; it wouldn’t surprise me if the next home system does so too. I have decided to see if W7 and a more modern hardware makes OWA easier to use. I have had to upgrade my phone since my current one was very old, and they didn’t want to support BB6. Microsoft have also bought Yammer and Skype recently and launched Lync as part of the desktop; so everyone needs a clear road map. I shall start with the view that I should use Lync for chat and Yammer for micro-blogging inside the company. Obviously, outside the company I shall continue to use what people read/reply to. An interesting insight, inside a company managers can declare use policies that have a chance of sticking, but it’s not guarenteed.

So can pidgin act as a Lync chat client? Here’s the google search, here’s the pidgin plugins home page., it seems SIPE is the keyword, and the pidgin page says it’ll support TRM as well as implying it’ll support Lync although it seems designed for MS Office Communicator.

So, here’s the SIPE code, http://sourceforge.net/projects/sipe/, it’s an NSIS install on Windows, think I had to reboot windows to see the “Office Communicator” option. The configuration runes are documented on this page, which is part of the O365 community site. DFL 9th Oct 2014

Yvette Cooper at Demos

This is/was a note on a speech made by Yvette Cooper called the challenges of a Digital World to our security and liberty. This has a link to the speech, but was made in May 2014, the world has moved on. As ever my review of Labour front-bench speeches proves/proved to optimistic. I have marked the article deprecated.

Using EXIF on my home IT

I need to write a script that installs author and copyright facts into my pictures.  The EXIF libraries are what I need. I’ll also need a scripting language; I used cygwin bash as my prototyping environment.

Apache Flume

Flume is a distributed, reliable, and available service for efficiently collecting, aggregating, and moving large amounts of log data. It has a simple and flexible architecture based on streaming data flows. It is robust and fault tolerant with tunable reliability mechanisms and many failover and recovery mechanisms. It uses a simple extensible data model that allows for online analytic application. I need to check this out.
