I needed to update my Elementary build, by quite a bit. Sadly it still needs a re-install via a USB, and so some of the notes on Installing elementary OS using a USB remains useful. I am upgrading from Freya to Loki (0.4.x) , will version 1.0 be Odin. Read More

Back to Ubuntu

Back to Ubuntu

I have left Elementary and returned to Ubuntu, which is on v20 now. I am tired of having Linux stuff just not work. Elementary’s distro upgrade path is a menace, there’s no RDP, cloud disks are a pain in the butt, and now I found problems with bluetooth. Here are my notes on starting up on Ubuntu again.  … Read More

Losing sight of my remote disks

Losing sight of my remote disks

I discovered that my two remote disks cannot be seen on my W10 laptop, nor my elementary OS laptop. I fixed this by rebooting the disks which are connected to the network via an RJ45/USB connector to a BT Home Hub. This should work better than that. Here are my notes. … Read More

Linux Power Management

Linux Power Management

Been trying to get my latest Linux Laptop to behave nicely while on battery. It’s an Elementary Luna build. I came to the conclusion that there’s not much that can be done; it’s one of those things we leave to the OS authors, in this case Canonical. Read More

notify-send

notify-send

While installing docker, I decided I needed to write some notifications to ensure the configuration works. See Docker. I started with a TCL/TK script, which these days looks a bit old school, and writing the packer was (& remains) difficult. Virtualbox reports its status on Ubuntu via a very pretty interface, prettier than Apple script anyway, so I thought I’d have a lock. Read More

Gdrive & Linux

Gdrive & Linux

My original article in 2015 pointed at the fanclub’s grive, this ceased to work on my elementary build and so with some googling I found this page

http://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/276/how-to-install-google-drive/2478#2478

and installed grive 2, looks like it needs rc files

It seems that googledrive integration with Linux is going to be weak for some reason, it can’t be because it’s hard given the Linux expertise that exists in the company and they seem not to be implementing WEBDAV. This is a bit of a pain as I’d love to use the default file managers on my Linux builds. However, google publish a developer API and Nautilus is open source. It could be done. Read More
