I was asked by my sister for advice on building a web e-commerce solution which set me thinking about if I could sell some “merch”. Here are my notes. …

WordPress supports Shopify, or vice versa, who seem happy for you to wrap their functionality in your site.

It seems that 3rd party fulfilment is now called dropshipping. Shopify has a dropshiping page They point me at Oberlo and their dropshipping and  mugs pages.  It makes me wonder if they auction the fulfilments?  (Surely not?)

  1. Can i prototype this for free?
  2. Is my investment in Photobox any use? i.e. do they sell through Oberlo.
  3. Will this fly?

I decided that making the site beautiful was also important, I had assumed that WP themes would be enough, but I found these sites too.

  1. https://www.shopify.com/blog/11863377-30-beautiful-and-creative-ecommerce-website-designs
  2. https://platt.edu/blog/top-20-beautiful-websites/
  3. and of course CSS zen garden, this one Verde Moderna looks cool
  4. and Theme Forest

Have I missed my opportunity? More from Shopify, on how to do it, and an article from Medium on why it’s too late and the margins are shit, although what I want to do is merely low level incremental income. My problem is can I make something that would ship?  I am not looking to live on this. I was assuming a higher margin than 5%.
